Consultant Criteria

Bankruptcy

Officers of the business must not be undischarged bankrupts.

Insurance

The business should carry adequate insurance cover, appropriate and relative to the services provided. BPCA recommend the following as a minimum requirement:

  • Public Liability £2 million
  • Professional Indemnity £0.5 million
  • Any business which employs persons - minimum £10m Employers Liability Insurance

Potential members should consult their broker to ensure adequate cover is in place and should consider whether they offer services regionally, nationally or internationally as this will have a bearing on the premium(s). Please consult your broker for their advice.

Qualifications

BPCA need to be confident that the services offered are supported by industry recognised qualifications, knowledge and expertise, therefore as a minimum Consultants must hold one of the following:

  • RSPH/BPCA Level 2 Award in Pest Management
  • RSPH/BPCA Level 2 Certificate in Pest Control
  • BPC Diploma Part I (previously BPC Diploma)
  • RPSH Certificate in Pest Control
  • NVQ in Pest Control
  • BPCA Fumigation Diploma
  • IPCA Diploma
  • Lantra Level 2 Award in Pest Management

In addition, Consultants must be able to demonstrate possession of an industry recognised qualification relevant to the services they offer. Examples include:

  • Certificated Field Biologist
  • Food Hygiene Diploma
  • Chartered status
  • Degree qualified
  • NEBOSH
  • RAMPS registered

The above list is not exhaustive and is dependent on the nature of your work; other qualifications will be considered (on a case-by-case basis) by the BPCA Executive Board.

Continual Professional Development (CPD)

All consultants must also be members of a recognised CPD scheme. The following CPD schemes are acceptable for membership:

  • BPCA Registered
  • Basis Prompt
  • In-house schemes approved by BPCA (contact for more details).

Communication

Consultants must advise BPCA of the services they provide for these to be promoted on their behalf under the following headings:

  • Auditing
  • Training and certification
  • Expert witness work
  • Service support
  • Systems support / Health and safety advice
  • Information provision
  • Research

If your business specialises in an area not listed above, please contact the BPCA office.

Sub-contracting

The business must not sub-contract any work involving the eradication of pest species except to other BPCA members (who are also bound by the requirements of the Code of Practice).

Governance

Applicants must undertake to abide by the requirements of Codes of Practice, BPCA Code of Conduct and BPCA Articles and Regulations of Association.
