Do pest controllers need CPD?

In short, yes! CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development and refers to the process of tracking and documenting the skills, knowledge and experience that you gain both formally and informally as you work, beyond your initial training. CPD does not replace the need for learning, training or formal qualifications however it does prove an individual's commitment to best practice, professionalism and lifelong learning. CPD is a great way to stay up-to-date with legislation changes, best practice and key changes to your industry.

For full BPCA Servicing Membership, all staff involved in the eradication and control of pest species must be members of a recognised CPD scheme. For this BPCA, recommends the PROMPT Professional Pest Controllers Register run by BASIS. However, we also accept in-house CPD schemes if BPCA approves them.

what is basis prompt

What is the BASIS PROMPT?

The BASIS PROMPT Pest Controllers Register is an industry-wide initiative which provides independent proof that a pest controller has received proper training and continued to update their expertise.

Being on the register means that professional pest technicians:

  • Can show they have received proper training
  • Have achieved the required level of competence to do their work to a professional standard
  • Have invested time in keeping their knowledge and skills up-to-date through regular CPD activities

The registration has to be renewed every year, so members of the register will always be aware of the most up-to-date legal obligations, techniques and products.

More about BASIS Prompt

What do you have to do to stay on the register and meet Servicing Criteria?

PROMPT requires full members to achieve 20 CPD points over a year (starting 1 January and ending 31 December). Earning 20 CPD points should take between 10 and 20 hours of qualifying activities, depending on the content and level of participation.

How do you get CPD points?

CPD doesn't necessarily require attendance on training courses: any activity that can be defined as personal development whether maintaining, improving or broadening the knowledge or skills necessary for the execution of your daily work could be allocated CPD points.

You can earn CPD points through a variety of opportunities and activities delivered by the BPCA, including:
