This UK Rural Skills (UKRS) accredited training course will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and basic skills in the safe use of air weapons that can be used for effective pest control. It introduces candidates to safe handling, firing and maintenance of air rifles and air pistols (air weapons) as well as the knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation in relation to air weapons and their security.

2Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to transport, carry, handle, load and discharge air weapons for pest control and understand current legislation relating to ownership, storage, transportation, carriage and use of air weapons.

Overview

This one-day, classroom based, training course covers a mix of both theory and practical elements.

Following successful completion of the Safe Use of Firearms for Pest Management programme, you will be able to:

Carry out work safely in line with health and safety requirements
Carry out a risk assessment of the environment where air weapons are to be used
Wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment for the activity, transport air weapons and their ammunition safely in accordance with relevant legislation and codes of practice
Carry both unloaded and loaded air weapons safely, in accordance with relevant legislation and codes of practice
Determine the maximum effective range of rifle projectiles according to the type of ammunition used
Determine the maximum effective range of air rifles and air pistols according to ammunition used and target species
Determine how to establish a firing line and safe arc of fire
Establish permission to shoot and signposted safety zones
Determine the special conditions required for night shoots
Determine the most appropriate ammunition according to target species, select the correct ammunition and carry out safe loading and unloading procedures for rifles.
Use safe stance and firing positions for the target when using rifles for pest control.
Aim and discharge rifles safely and pistols accurately, using rifle shooting aids where appropriate.
Deal with a barrel obstruction or misfires in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions and safe working practices.

Upon successful completion of the course candidates will receive a certificate valid for 5 years, accredited by UK Rural Skills (UKRS).

While there aren't any pre-course entry requirements, you must be aged 16 or over to take this programme.

This is a one day, classroom based course. All study will be achieved during the one day course.

9 am for coffee, 9.30 am start, 4.30 pm finish.
